Three ways packing is usually sold

• Materials only. They drop off cartons, tape, bubble wrap and paper; you do the work. Cheapest, and fine if you have a week of evenings.
• Partial packing. The crew handles the fragile and awkward things — kitchen, glass, artwork, TVs — and you do clothes and books. This is the option most people should take and the one fewest people ask about.
• Full packing. They pack everything, usually the day before the move. Most expensive, and the only version that genuinely saves you a weekend.

What to ask about packing

• Are cartons included, rented or charged per box? Rented cartons get collected afterwards, which is cheaper and less waste, but you have a deadline to empty them.
• Who packs the kitchen? It is the slowest room in any house and the one most likely to be quietly excluded from a “full packing” price.
• How are TVs, mirrors and artwork handled? Flat items want a proper crate or a purpose-made box, not blankets and hope.
• Do they label by room? Labelling is what makes unpacking survivable. Confirm it happens and that the labels match your new floor plan.
• What is the liability on a box you packed yourself? Usually much lower than on one they packed. Worth knowing before, not after.
• Will they take the empties away? Otherwise you own forty flattened cartons.
